ELECTION DAY IS MARCH 23

ELECTION DAY IS MARCH 23 ✦

Hi, I’m Emily Faye Ratner!

I am running for the Democratic State Central Committee (DSCC) and the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee (OPDEC) because I believe in the people of our state. I am a civil rights and criminal defense attorney, a PhD student who studies Louisiana’s history of civil rights struggles, and a mom. I have a long history of working with a broad range of New Orleanians and Louisianans to bring us closer to the Louisiana we deserve. My experiences of community-focused work as an organizer, lawyer, teacher, and student have taught me that a Democratic party that genuinely represents its base can consistently win in Louisiana - and can raise the quality of life for all of us.

For too long, the Democratic party in our state has consolidated power among a privileged few, while failing to build on Louisiana’s rich history and legacy as the front lines of slavery resistance, Reconstruction, and the civil rights movement. After the last election, in which the state party slept through a full Republican state takeover, I’ve joined with other Democrats around the state who are saying enough is enough. We know that a Democratic party that centers its base can and will win in our state. Let’s work together to build the Louisiana we deserve!

I moved to New Orleans as a college student, and have served a number of community organizations as a volunteer, member, or staff member, including VOTE, the Orleans Parish Prison Reform Coalition (OPPRC), Junebug Productions, PATOIS, the National Lawyers Guild, Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights, Jewish Voice for Peace, the Worker’s Center for Racial Justice, the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (LACDL), and Safe Streets, Strong Communities. I have worked in coalitions that have fought for and won structural changes in the laws of our state and put progressives into political office when conventional wisdom told us it was impossible. I know we can fight for and win the Louisiana we deserve.
